What Is Change Management?

By Definition Change management is the practice of applying a structured approach to the transition of an organization from a current state (as is) to a future state (to be) in order to achieve expected benefits- ACMP (Association of Change Management Professionals) standard of Change Management.

Often this change will impact people, processes, technology, and the workplace (culture).

As a Change Manager or Change Management Professional (CCMP), your role is to help guide an organization through this journey.  Many times, an organization going through change focuses solely on the project pieces and physical or technological resources that are changing while leaving out the impact this initiative is going to have on the individual employees.  By ignoring this impact, there can be a massive disruption to ongoing work, as well as employee morale, value, and respect.

Change Management principles not only apply to large-scale changes but can be applied to little changes as well like new software, CRM, or processes. By implementing change management best practices, you ensure that your team remains a valuable commodity and show them respect as individual contributors. Thus, change management has a direct return on investment (ROI) of the initiative being undertaken, as well as an intrinsic return by valuing your team.

What is the CCMP?

The CCMP certification was developed by the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP) by incorporating best practices across multiple industries, standards and certifications.  Incorporating principles from SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources), PMP (Project Management Professional), Lean Six Sigma, ISO (International Standards Organization), and ANSI (American National Standards Institute), the organization designed a certification to standardize the processes to be used when dealing with organizational and individual change.

The CCMP certification is ideal for:

  • Organizational change managers

  • Project Managers and project leaders

  • HR professionals

  • Training and communication professionals

  • Knowledge management specialists

  • Professionals with credentials in HR, project management, Six Sigma, and more

Change managers and change management skill sets, ensure that you can lead a team through rapid change without forgetting about the team. Adding Change Management to a foundation in Project Management (PMP), Agile, or Lean Six Sigma, allows you to be a multifaceted professional who can manage both sides of any project initiative, while also understanding and integrating various internal and external departments like HR, Operations, Marketing and Sales.

What if I don’t meet the experience requirement, should I take a course anyway?

Yes!!  Even if you do not have the hours and experience to earn the certification, the training will greatly enhance your professional career. Across the industry, the CCMP certification is starting to gain traction, but organizations still need professionals who can help them navigate through organizational change. This training is foundational and can be built upon to either earn the certification or enhance your professional acumen.

Maintaining Your CCMP Certification Requirements

Much like the Project Management Professional (PMP ®) the CCMP Requires you to earn 60 Professional development units or PDUs every 3 years.

According to ACMP, PDUs can be earned in a variety of ways: attending conferences, QEP-qualified courses, webinars, reading books or articles, working as a CM professional, other courses focused on disciplines, and giving back to the profession by helping to educate others.

If you are not able to, or choose not to accumulate the required 60 PDUs or do not renew your application within 3 years, your certification will be suspended for up to a year and you will no longer be able to call yourself a CCMP. If you still do not earn the required PDUs after one year, your certification will expire and you will need to start over at the beginning.

About This Practice PMI-ACP Exam

All questions were created by a team of PMP expert instructors referencing a set of cloned PMP questions provided to us by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Every instructor who worked on this project is certified by PMI as an Authorized Training Partner (ATP) instructor. They worked hard to meticulously align each question to a specific domain and task from the PMP exam content outline published by PMI according to the same percentage of the actual PMP exam.

The time limit for this practice PMP exam is set for 250 minutes. When you take the actual PMP exam, you can take two 10-minute breaks, so we highly recommend that you schedule and take those breaks during this practice test giving you an actual 230 minutes of testing time. We recommend taking your first break after question 60 and your second break after question 120.

What is the difference between
Change Management and Project Management?

Often when people hear the term change management, they immediately associate this with a project, and they would be correct. Change Management is a sub-component of the Project Management Professional and the PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner certification. Project Managers must learn to deal with and manage project change.

Change Management as a profession, is a parallel focus separate from but complementary to project management. Much like Change Management is an included part of project management, Project Management is an included component of CCMP.

While change management and project management are related, they have distinct focuses. Change management is about applying knowledge and tools to achieve the desired change, focusing on behavior, structure, and culture. Project management, on the other hand, deals with a project's scope, cost, and schedule. Both should work together for successful project implementation.

Projects often have specific start and end dates but change management activities will extend beyond the project until the desired change has been achieved.

Both project management and change management plans and activities should be integrated into an overall plan, but it is important to note the synergy and distinction between the disciplines and when one action triggers a requirement from the other.
